Carmelo is from Spain and studied at the University of Seville where he earned a master’s degree in Hispanic Studies (Language and Literature) and a teaching qualification. His teaching career started in London, where he taught and coordinated Spanish at several schools including an IB World School, the predecessor to what is now the International School of London, and IB World Schools in Spain and the Bahamas.  Whilst in the UK he also worked for the IBO in Cardiff as a manager responsible for Groups 1 and 2 of the Diploma. Much of his extensive experience is in teaching the International Baccalaureate courses, particularly Spanish Literature and Spanish B of the IB Diploma; and he has also supervised the Extended Essay.

Carmelo has a passion for bilingual and multilingual education, which has guided his work throughout his career when he undertook a range of leadership and management roles. Carmelo has coordinated language departments and implemented the MYP and DP IBO programmes at different IB World Schools including Sotogrande International School (Spain) and Lyford Cay International School (Bahamas), amongst others.

Carmelo continues to work with the IBO in a variety of capacities, including marking as well as leading workshops and school visits in Europe, America and Australia.  In his free time, he enjoys gardening, swimming, tennis and diving which he took up when he lived in The Bahamas.
